The Secret to Photographing Active Kids (Hint: It's Not What You Think)

Vancouver photographer captures kid running in Stanley Park

Every parent says some version of the same thing before their session.

"Just so you know, she doesn't sit still." "He's going through a phase." "They will NOT cooperate. I'm warning you now."

And every time, I smile and think the same thing back: "Perfect. That's exactly what I need."

Because here's the secret that most people don't expect to hear from a photographer:

I'm not trying to get your kids to stop.

The Myth of the "Perfect" Photo Session

Somewhere along the way, family photography got tangled up with the idea of control. Everyone in a line. Everyone looking at the camera. Everyone smiling on three.

And if your child happens to be the kind of kid who runs, climbs, rolls down hills, or decides that right now is the perfect time to lie flat on the ground and stare at a bug well, that's a problem to be managed.

I don't see it that way at all.

The kids who "don't sit still" are often the ones who give me the most extraordinary photos. Because they're not performing. They're just being exactly, completely, wonderfully themselves. And that's the whole point.

What I Actually Do

When I'm photographing an active, energetic, child-led little person, my approach is simple:

I follow them.

If they want to run toward the water, we go to the water. If they want to climb that tree, we let them climb the tree (safely, of course). If they want to spin in circles until they fall over laughing, honestly, some of my favourite photos have come from exactly that moment.

Child-led sessions aren't chaos. They're trust. You're trusting your child to show me who they really are, and I'm trusting that who they really are is more than enough to work with.

The only time I'll ever redirect is if something is genuinely unsafe. Everything else? Fair game. Pick up that stick. Splash in that puddle. Chase that dog. I'm right behind you.

The One Thing I Never Do

I never tell a child to be something they're not.

This sounds obvious, but it's actually the thing that makes the biggest difference in how a session feels and in the photos you end up with.

If a child is shy, I photograph the shyness. That careful, watchful way they peek from behind a parent's leg. The moment they're not quite sure about me yet. Those photos are just as beautiful, maybe more so, than a wide open smile, because they're true. They're that child, in that season of their life, being exactly as they are.

There's no pressure to perform. No "can you smile for me?" No "look over here!" The camera comes to them, not the other way around

What Playful Sessions Actually Look Like

I want to paint you a picture of what a session looks like as a Vancouver Family Photographer, when we let kids lead.

We arrive at Stanley Park or wherever we've chosen to meet. The kids immediately do what kids do, they're curious, they wander, they find something fascinating on the ground. I hang back a little and just watch. I'm looking for the way your daughter holds your hand without thinking about it. The way your son runs back to check you're still there. The moment everyone forgets I'm holding a camera.

That's when I start shooting.

By the end of the session, the kids are usually having so much fun they don't want to leave. And the parents? They're always a little surprised "that didn't feel like a photoshoot at all."

That's exactly how it's supposed to feel.

A Few Things That Help (For Parents)

While I truly believe that active, playful kids make for the best sessions, there are a few things that help everything flow even more smoothly:

Skip the big meal right before. A full tummy and a toddler on the move is a recipe for a very different kind of session. A light snack is perfect.

Bring their favourite thing. A toy, a snack they love, a comfort item, not to bribe them into photos, but to give them something familiar in an unfamiliar setting. It helps shy kids warm up faster.

Wear something comfortable. If your kids can't run in it, leave it at home. The best photos happen when everyone can actually move.

Let go of the outcome. This is the big one. When parents relax, kids relax. When kids relax, magic happens. Trust me and trust them, we'll get there together.

The Photos You'll Actually Treasure

I've photographed a lot of families across Vancouver. And without exception, the photos that end up on walls, in frames, in the messages parents send me months later, they're never the ones where everyone was perfectly still and looking perfectly at the camera.

They're the ones where your kid was mid-laugh, mid-run, mid-something completely unplanned.

Because those are the photos that look like your life. Like your family. Like right now, exactly as it is.

And right now, even the busy, loud, won't-sit-still version of it — is worth remembering.
