What to Expect from a Family Photography Session in Vancouver | Vancouver Family & Newborn Photographer
Booking a family photography session for the first time, or even the fifth time, can bring up a lot of questions. What do we wear? What if it rains? What if my toddler refuses to cooperate? How many photos will we get?
As a Vancouver family photographer, these are the questions I hear most. So I've put together everything you need to know about what a session with me actually looks and feels like, from the moment you book to the day your gallery lands in your inbox.
Where Will Our Session Take Place?
Most of my family sessions happen in one of three places: Stanley Park, in your home, or a location that's meaningful to your family.
Stanley Park is my most popular location, and for good reason. The ancient trees, the dappled forest light, the open meadows. It's one of the most beautiful natural backdrops in the world and it's right here in Vancouver. Families feel relaxed here, kids have space to run, and the light is genuinely magical.
In-home sessions are perfect for families with newborns, very young children, or anyone who wants something that feels intimate and real. Your home tells your story in a way no park ever could.
And if you have somewhere special in mind a neighbourhood you love, a beach that means something to your family, a spot that's just yours, I'm absolutely open to travelling to you. Your session should feel like you.
How Long Does a Session Last?
A typical family session with me is one hour. In my experience, an hour is the sweet spo,t long enough to settle in, explore, and capture a variety of moments, but short enough that children stay engaged and nobody feels exhausted.
One hour might sound short, but you'd be surprised what unfolds in that time when nobody is rushed. Some of my most treasured images come from the last fifteen minutes of a session, when everyone has finally forgotten the camera is there.
What Should We Wear?
Shortly after booking, I'll send you my style guide with everything you need to know about dressing for your session. But my overarching philosophy is this: I want you to look like yourself, not a curated version of yourself.
I don't have a client closet. I don't want you to look like every other family I've photographed. I want to capture your uniqueness, the way you actually dress on a Sunday morning when you're happy and relaxed. Soft, comfortable, co-ordinated but not matching. Colours that feel like your family.
The style guide will give you practical tips on tones that photograph beautifully in Vancouver's natural light, but the most important thing is that you feel like you.
What Happens if it Rains?
Welcome to Vancouver or as locals lovingly call it, Raincouver.
Here's my honest approach: I keep a close eye on the weather in the days leading up to your session and I'll be in touch to confirm we're good to go. If it's a little cloudy or there's a light drizzle, I'm absolutely for it. There's a softness and a beauty to overcast days that I genuinely love photographing in, the light is even, the colours are rich, and some of my most beautiful images have come from grey Vancouver days.
If it's truly pouring, we'll reschedule together and find a new date that works. Your session should feel enjoyable, not soggy.
What if My Child Has a Meltdown?
This is the question I get most, and my answer always surprises people.
If a child is having a hard moment, I give them space. Full stop. I never push, I never force, I never try to manufacture a smile that isn't there. Sometimes just stepping back and letting a child run around for a few minutes fixes everything. Children regulate through movement, and outdoor sessions give them all the space they need to do exactly that.
Honestly? Meltdowns during outdoor sessions are rare. Kids love being outside. They love exploring, climbing, running, discovering. When children are in their natural element, which is outdoors, they're almost always in a good mood. The sessions that parents dread the most often turn into their favourite afternoons.
How Do You Actually Run the Session?
My approach is a mix of documentary and lifestyle photography, which means sometimes I step back and simply observe what's happening naturally, and sometimes I'll offer gentle direction to guide you into a moment.
You might hear me say "walk towards me holding hands" or "dad, pick her up and spin her", simple, playful prompts that lead to real reactions rather than stiff poses. Other times I'll quietly step to the side and let a moment unfold entirely on its own.
You never need to worry about what to do with your hands, where to look, or whether you're doing it right. That's my job. Your job is simply to show up and be your family.
Can We Request Specific Shots?
Absolutely and I love knowing what matters to you. If there's a particular grouping you want (grandparents, siblings, just the kids together), or a specific type of image you've always wanted, tell me before we start and I'll make sure we get it.
That said, I'll always leave plenty of room for the unscripted moments, the ones that can't be planned. In my experience, those are always the ones that end up on the wall.
What Time of Day Is Best?
In Vancouver, golden hour is my favourite time to photograph families, that warm, soft light in the hour before sunset is simply magic. But golden hour in Vancouver changes dramatically with the seasons.
In summer, sunset can stretch as late as 9 or 10pm, so I typically like to photograph around 7pm when the light is already beautiful but families aren't exhausted. In winter, I prefer late afternoon, around 3 or 4pm, when the light is low, warm and incredibly flattering.
When you book your session, I'll recommend the ideal time based on the season, your location, and your family's schedule. If you have young children with early bedtimes, we'll always find a time that works for your real life.
How Many Images Will We Receive?
I promise a minimum of 50 beautifully edited digital images, but in practice, my galleries almost always contain more than that. I'd rather give you more images that you love than fewer images that feel like enough.
Your gallery will be delivered within 2–3 weeks of your session through a private online link. From there you can download your digital images, share with family, and order prints directly through the gallery with shipping to your door.
I believe in images that live outside of a phone screen. A printed photograph on your wall, a heirloom album on your shelf, these are the things that outlast all of us. Prints are available to order directly through your gallery.
How Do I Book?
If you've read this far, I'd love to meet your family.
Every session begins with a conversation, I want to know who you are, what you're hoping to capture, and what feels right for your family. Reach out through the link below and let's start planning something real.
