Why Juniper Point Is My Favourite Hidden Gem for Family & Couple Photos in West Vancouver

I wasn't planning on photographing anyone that day.
My family and I had headed out to Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver — partly to spend the day together, partly because as a Vancouver family photographer, I'd been wanting to scout a new location I'd heard about but never shot at myself. We followed a short trail through the trees that opens up onto a wide, sun-bleached rock bluff overlooking Howe Sound. I had my camera with me, like always, wanting to see the light for myself before bringing a client out here.
And then I saw them.
A mom, crouched low next to her little girl, who was leaning against a big piece of driftwood with the ocean stretched out behind them like something out of a postcard. The toddler had that unmistakable just-walked-here, very-determined toddler energy. The mom was laughing softly, reaching out to steady her. It was such a real, unposed, them moment that I couldn't help myself.
I walked over and asked if I could take a few photos.
She said yes. And what happened over the next ten minutes is exactly why I now tell every family I work with: if you only photograph one spot in West Vancouver, make it this one.
The Moments That Make Juniper Point Special
What struck me, watching this mom and her daughter, was how little I had to do. I didn't pose them. I didn't ask them to look at the camera or smile on three. I just watched.
The mom reached out a hand to help her daughter balance on the log. The little girl, curious and cautious, looked straight at me with those wide eyes that toddlers have when they're deciding whether you're a friend or a stranger. Then a kiss on the forehead. Then the two of them wandering off together up the rocky bluff, mom reaching down, daughter taking her own sweet time.
None of it was performed. All of it was real. And that's the gift this location gives you — the ocean, the light, the wild grass and driftwood do so much of the work that you don't have to "do" anything except be together.
That's the whole philosophy behind my work as a Vancouver photographer, honestly. I'm not chasing perfect smiles. I'm chasing this — the in-between moments, the small gestures, the version of your family that you'll actually want to remember.
Why Juniper Point Works So Well for Photos
A few things make this little corner of Lighthouse Park such a special spot for both family and couple sessions — and why, as a Vancouver photographer, I keep coming back to it:
The light is soft and forgiving. Because you're right on the water, the open sky bounces light back at you from every direction. No harsh shadows, no squinting — just warm, even light that's especially beautiful in the late afternoon.
The backdrop does the heavy lifting. Weathered driftwood, wild coastal grass, smooth rock bluffs, and the open expanse of Howe Sound and English Bay behind you. It feels wild and a little secret, even though it's only 20 minutes from the city.
It's intimate, not crowded. Unlike some of Vancouver's more popular photo spots, Juniper Point tends to be quiet, especially outside of peak midday hours. That means more space to actually move, play, and explore without an audience.
It works for every kind of session. Couples get a romantic, windswept backdrop. Families get room for kids to roam and explore (which, as any parent knows, leads to the best unplanned moments). Even a solo portrait session feels grounded here, with the ocean as your witness.
Good to Know Before You Go

Where it is: Juniper Point is located inside Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver, near the historic Point Atkinson Lighthouse.
The hike: This is genuinely accessible for families. The trail down to the point is short, roughly a 15-to-20-minute round trip, with some uneven, rocky terrain near the viewpoint itself. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially with little ones in tow.
Parking: There's a parking lot at the entrance to Lighthouse Park (paid parking applies). It can fill up quickly on sunny weekends, so arriving a little early, or planning a weekday or golden hour session, helps.
Best time to visit: Late afternoon into golden hour is when this place truly glows. The light softens, the crowds thin out, and the whole bluff takes on that warm, dreamy quality that makes for the most beautiful, timeless photos.
A gentle note on safety: Juniper Point is a rock bluff right above the water, and parts of it drop off without much warning. It's an incredible spot for families, but little ones (and curious adults!) should be kept close to hand near the edges. I always build this into how I plan a session here, there's plenty of room to play and explore safely, you just want to stay aware of where the ground ends.
What to bring: Water, layers (it's coastal, so it can be breezier than you expect), and maybe a small toy or snack if you're bringing little ones who might need a moment of distraction while we capture the real, in-between stuff.
A Spot Worth Discovering Together
I think about that mom and her daughter often. Two people who, just like me, had simply wandered out to see something beautiful — and ended up, by complete chance, with photographs that I hope she'll treasure for years.
