Why Weekday Family Photography Sessions Beat Weekends in Vancouver

If you're planning a family photo session in Vancouver, there's a good chance your first instinct is to book it for a weekend. That's when everyone's off work, the kids are out of school, and it just feels like the natural time to carve out an hour for photos.

But after photographing family sessions all over this city like Stanley Park, Lighthouse Park, Juniper Point, the West Vancouver coastal trails. I've noticed something: my best sessions, the ones where families walk away saying "that felt so easy," happen more often on weekdays than weekends. Here's why.

1. The Trails Actually Feel Like Yours

Golden hour in Stanley Park on a Saturday evening means sharing the path with dozens of other people also chasing that same light joggers, cyclists, other families, tourists. It's not impossible to shoot around, but it changes the feel of the session. Kids notice an audience. Parents get a little more self-conscious. The candid, forget-the-camera moments I'm chasing get harder to find.

On a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, the same trail can feel almost private. Fewer people means your kids can wander, climb, and get distracted by a banana slug without an audience, which, ironically, is exactly when the best photos happen.

2. Golden Hour Parking Is a Different Story

Anyone who's tried to find parking at Third Beach or Lighthouse Park on a summer weekend evening knows the struggle. Weekday evenings, especially outside of peak tourist season, are dramatically easier — which means less stress before the session even starts, and more of that calm carrying into your photos.

3. Kids Are Less "Peopled Out"

A lot of families default to weekend sessions because it seems like the obvious free time. But weekends are often already full, soccer games, birthday parties, grandparents visiting, errands. By the time golden hour rolls around on a Saturday, kids (and parents) can be running on empty.

A weekday session, often catches kids in a different headspace: less socially "peopled out," more naturally playful, more themselves. That's the energy that makes for genuine, connection-based photos rather than everyone just trying to get through it.

4. More Flexibility with Location and Timing

Because weekday demand is lower, there's simply more room to pick the ideal date and time for your family — rather than competing with everyone else trying to book the one Saturday evening with perfect weather in the forecast.

5. It Doesn't Have to Mean Taking a Day Off

A common assumption is that weekday sessions require using vacation time. In reality, most family sessions run around golden hour, which in Vancouver shifts through the seasons but often lands in the early evening. That means an after-work or after-school session is very doable without anyone needing to take time off.

So, Is a Weekend Session Ever Right?

Of course, sometimes a weekend really is the only time that works for your family, and that's completely fine. The goal isn't to talk anyone out of a weekend booking; it's just to open up the idea that a quiet Tuesday evening in the forest might actually give your family an easier, more natural experience than you'd expect.

If you're weighing your options, I'm always happy to help you figure out the best day and time for your family's session.
