5 Playful Prompts for Genuine Family Photos
(That Don't Feel Like a Photoshoot at All)
By Neha Hira | Vancouver Family Photographer
One of the questions I get asked most before a session is: "What do we actually do?"
And it's a fair question. Most of us have been conditioned to think that a photoshoot means standing still, looking at the camera, and trying not to blink at the wrong moment.
But that's not how I work.
My sessions are built around movement, play, and the kind of natural interactions that happen when families are just... being families. The prompts I use aren't poses, they're little invitations to connect. And the photos that come from them never look like a photoshoot. They look like a memory.
Here are five of my favourites.
1. The Slow Walk
What I ask: "Just walk together, wherever feels natural."
This is where almost every session starts, and it never gets old.
Something magical happens when a family starts moving together. Kids run ahead, then loop back. Parents reach for each other's hands without thinking. A toddler stops to investigate something on the ground and everyone waits, smiling.
Nobody is performing. Nobody is thinking about the camera. They're just walking, and I'm quietly following, catching every in-between moment along the way.
What you'll feel: Relaxed. Like you're just on a Sunday stroll.
What the photos look like: Real. Warm. Like you were actually there.
2. The Whisper
What I ask: "Lean in and whisper something silly into your child's ear."
This one never fails.
It doesn't matter what you whisper "you smell like a potato" works just as well as "I love you to the moon." What matters is the moment after. The squirm. The giggle. The way a child looks up at their parent with pure delight.
That split second of reaction is one of my favourite things to photograph. It's completely unplanned, completely genuine, and completely them.
What you'll feel: Playful. A little silly. Exactly right.
What the photos look like: Pure joy. The kind that makes you laugh every time you look at it.
3. The Big Squeeze
What I ask:"Everyone pile in for the biggest hug you've got."
This prompt is chaos in the best possible way.
Someone always ends up squished. A toddler usually tries to escape. There's always at least one person laughing so hard their eyes are closed. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, a real, warm, completely unposed moment of connection that no amount of careful staging could ever recreate.
The squeeze works because it removes all self-consciousness. You're too busy holding on to worry about what you look like.
What you'll feel: Warm. Close. A little squished.
What the photos look like: Exactly like your family actually is.
4. The Explorer
What I ask:"Let your little one lead, follow wherever they go."
This one is especially magical with toddlers and young children.
When kids are given permission to just explore, to pick up the stick, to crouch down and look at the bug, to run toward the water, something shifts. They stop being aware of the camera entirely. And parents, following along, become completely present too.
Some of my most treasured images have come from this prompt. A child discovering something for the first time. A parent crouching down to see what their toddler sees. Little feet on mossy paths, leading the way.
What you'll feel: Present. Unhurried. Like you have all the time in the world.
What the photos look like: Childhood, exactly as it should be.
5. The Look Back
What I ask:"Walk away from me, then at the count of three, everyone look back."
Simple. Effective. Always beautiful.
There's something about the look back that captures a family perfectly, the way they move together, the space between them, and then that shared moment of turning around. Kids always do it differently. Someone always pulls a face. Someone always laughs.
And in that one unguarded second, you get a portrait that feels completely natural, because it was.
What you'll feel: A little surprised at how easy that was.
What the photos look like: Timeless. The kind you frame.
The Secret Behind All of This
None of these prompts are about getting the perfect shot.
They're about getting you out of your head and back into the moment, with each other, with your kids, with the trail and the light and the beautiful ordinary magic of your family exactly as it is right now.
That's what I'm always chasing. Not perfection. Just truth.
And the truth, in my experience, is always more beautiful.
