When Should You Take Newborn Photos? A Vancouver Newborn Photographer’s Guide

If you're reading this at 3am with a baby on your chest, first: Hi, you're doing great.

Second: no, you have not missed the window for newborn photos. There isn't one.

I get asked about newborn photography timing more than almost anything else. New parents often come to me with a specific number stuck in their head:

"Newborn photos have to happen in the first two weeks."

And then life happens. Feeding, recovering, figuring out how to function on very little sleep, keeping another child alive, accepting help from family, or just trying to enjoy those first few weeks together.

Suddenly your baby is three weeks old. Or six weeks old. Or six months old.

So let's talk about when to take newborn photos, what that "ideal" window actually means, and why you are never too late to document your baby and your family.

When Should You Take Newborn Photos?

If you want that classic sleepy, curly, brand-new-baby look, I usually recommend scheduling an in-home newborn photography session within the first 2 to 4 weeks after your baby is born.

This is a sweet spot for the kind of natural newborn photos I create in your home. Babies are often still sleepy and curled up, newborn outfits still fit, and everyone is in that soft, slow, just-met-you phase.

But here's the important part:

2 to 4 weeks is an ideal window, not a deadline.

Sleep and feeding can be unpredictable at any stage, so there is never a guarantee that your baby will sleep through a session or behave exactly the way you imagined.

And honestly? That's okay.

Your newborn photography session isn't about getting your baby to perform.

It's about remembering what this season actually felt like.

What If My Baby Is Already Older?

This is the part I really want new parents to hear:

Newborn-style photos can be taken anytime.

Whether your baby is 3 weeks old, 8 weeks old, 4 months old, or 7 months old, we can still create beautiful, natural photographs that document this season of your family's life.

The photographs will simply look a little different.

A sleepy newborn curled up on your chest is beautiful.

So is a 6-month-old sitting up and grabbing at your hair.

So is the baby who has just discovered their toes.

So are the gummy smiles, the belly laughs, the rolls across the bed, the curious little expressions, and the way your baby reaches for you.

Those moments don't become less meaningful because they happened later.

Since I photograph families in their own homes using natural light and a candid, documentary-inspired approach, there isn't one specific "look" that only works during the first week.

The whole point is to photograph your family as you actually are right now.

Not to recreate a milestone you think you missed.

In-Home Newborn Photography in Vancouver

One of my favorite things about in-home newborn photography is that you don't have to pack up your entire life and take your brand-new baby somewhere unfamiliar.

We can photograph your family right where you are.

Your bedroom.

Your nursery.

The couch where you've spent countless hours feeding and cuddling.

The little details you've carefully chosen for your baby's room.

The ordinary spaces that will one day make you say, "Oh my gosh, I remember that."

And because the session is centered around connection rather than perfectly posed setups, we can let your baby lead us a little.

If they're hungry, we pause.

If they need to be held, we hold them.

If they wake up, we photograph those beautiful wide-open eyes.

If your toddler isn't interested in sitting still for a photograph, we don't need to force it.

What Age Is Too Old for Newborn Photos?

There really isn't one.

If you're wondering whether your baby is "too old" for newborn photography because you've passed the first few weeks, I'd encourage you to stop thinking about the session as something you missed.

Instead, think about what you can document now.

Maybe your baby is already smiling.

Maybe they're starting to interact with their siblings.

Maybe they're sitting up.

Maybe they're fascinated by everything around them.

Maybe they're changing so quickly that you already feel like the tiny newborn you brought home has disappeared.

That's exactly why photographs matter.

Your baby doesn't have to be five days old for this season to be worth remembering.

How Do You Decide When to Book Newborn Photos?

If you're not sure when to schedule your newborn photography session, ask yourself:

  • Do I want photographs that feel dreamy and sleepy, or photographs that feel like us, right now?

  • Is there a specific moment I want captured, like bringing the baby home, siblings meeting the baby, or a particular outfit or nursery?

  • Am I waiting for a "perfect" time that keeps not arriving?

  • Do I want to remember what our everyday life looked like during this season?

If it's the last one, that's your sign.

There is no perfect time. There's just now.

When Should You Book a Vancouver Newborn Photography Session?

If you're expecting a baby, I recommend reaching out before your due date so we can get your session on the calendar.

But if your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked anything yet, please don't assume you've missed your chance.

Tell me your baby's due date, or how old your baby is if they're already here and we can figure out what timing makes the most sense for your family.

There is no need to have everything figured out before you reach out.

The Simple Version

Here's what I want you to remember:

First 2–4 weeks: A sweet spot if you love that classic sleepy-newborn feeling.

After 4 weeks: Still absolutely worth photographing. Your baby's personality and connection with your family will simply become a bigger part of the story.

Months later: You haven't missed the opportunity to document this season. We photograph the baby and family you have right now.

And for an in-home newborn session, you don't need a perfectly decorated home, a perfectly sleepy baby, or a perfectly scheduled day.

You just need to show up as you are.

Your baby is not going to be less worth photographing because they're 6 months old instead of 6 days old.

If you've been putting off newborn photos because you think you've missed the window, consider this your permission to stop waiting for the perfect time and just document your family now.

I'd love to help you create photographs that feel like your family, real, connected, and full of the little moments you'll want to remember long after this season has passed.

Ready to plan your newborn session?

Tell me your baby's due date (or how old your baby is), and we'll figure out the best timing together.

Want to Remember More Than a Photograph?

Along with your newborn photography session, you can also add a Newborn Family Film.

These are short family films set to beautiful background music, capturing the little movements, interactions, and connections that photographs simply can't—the way your baby moves in your arms, a sibling's gentle touch, the cuddles, the smiles, and all those little in-between moments.

Because one day, you'll want to remember more than what it looked like.

You'll want to remember how this season felt.

Watch these two examples to get a feel for how I capture the little movements, interactions, and sounds of this season through photographs and film.
