The Ultimate Guide to In-Home Newborn Photography in Vancouver

newborn photography in home session

Bringing a new baby home is a beautiful, exhausting, wonderful whirlwind.

The early days are filled with tiny yawns, sleepy snuggles, feeding around the clock, figuring things out as you go, and wondering how someone so small can possibly take up so much space in your heart.

And somehow, while you're living it, everyone tells you how quickly it goes.

That's one of the reasons I love in-home newborn photography.

Instead of packing up your newborn, diaper bag, extra clothes, bottles, and everything else you suddenly need to leave the house, we simply document this season right where you are.

Your home. Your baby. Your family.

Nothing needs to be perfect.

In fact, I think there's something incredibly meaningful about photographs that show what those first days actually looked and felt like.

What Is In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography?

In-home newborn photography is a relaxed, natural approach to documenting your baby and your family in your own home.

Rather than creating a heavily styled studio setup, we use the spaces and light that already exist around you.

Maybe that's your bedroom where you've spent countless hours feeding and cuddling your baby.

Maybe it's the living room where your older child is getting used to being a big brother or sister.

Maybe it's the nursery you spent months preparing.

Or maybe it's simply the spot in your home where the afternoon light happens to be beautiful.

The goal isn't to create a perfect scene.

It's to document your family as you are right now.

I will gently guide you throughout the session so you aren't left wondering what to do, but there is plenty of room for things to unfold naturally.

Why Choose an In-Home Newborn Session?

You Don't Have to Leave the House

Those first weeks with a newborn can feel like a lot.

The last thing you may want to do is load everyone into the car and rush to a studio at a specific time.

With an in-home session, we come to you.

If your baby needs to nurse, we pause.

If they need a diaper change, we pause.

If everyone needs a few minutes to breathe, we pause.

There is no need to rush through the moments in between.

Your Home Becomes Part of the Story

One day, your baby will be grown.

You may not remember exactly what your home looked like during these early days, but photographs can bring you right back.

The chair where you fed them.

The bedroom where they slept beside you.

The nursery you carefully prepared.

The couch where your whole family piled together.

These ordinary spaces become part of your family's story.

And years from now, they may be some of the details you are most grateful to remember.

It's Easier for Siblings and Pets

If you have an older child, you already know that asking them to sit still for photographs isn't always realistic.

That's okay.

At home, they can move around, play, take breaks, and be themselves.

The same goes for your pets.

Your dog doesn't have to behave perfectly.

Your toddler doesn't have to cooperate perfectly.

We simply work with who they are.

Some of my favorite family photographs happen in the middle of the chaos.

Does My Home Need to Be Perfect?

Absolutely not.

This might be one of the biggest things I want you to know before your session:

Your home does not need to look like a magazine.

You just had a baby.

You have more important things to do than deep clean your house before your photographer arrives.

We will look for the rooms with the best natural light and work within those spaces.

Usually, that might be your bedroom, living room, nursery, or another room with beautiful window light.

You can do a little tidying if it makes you feel better, but you don't need to clean every room.

Clear the immediate area around the bed or couch, put away anything distracting, and then let the rest go.

Your baby won't remember whether the house was spotless.

And honestly, neither will you.

What you'll remember is how tiny they were.

What Should We Wear for an In-Home Newborn Session?

I recommend keeping things simple, comfortable, and timeless.

Soft neutrals, earthy tones, creams, muted colours, and gentle patterns tend to photograph beautifully in a home environment.

You don't need everyone to match.

Instead, think about coordinating colours and textures.

Soft cotton, linen, knits, and other natural textures can add beautiful dimension without taking attention away from your family.

And most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in.

You just had a baby. This is not the time to squeeze yourself into something you can't move or breathe in.

The photographs are about your connection, not about having the “perfect” outfit.
I will be available to clear any confusion you might have for your outfit, I actually would like to discuss it before the session.

What If My Baby Isn't Sleeping?

Your baby does not need to sleep through the session.

They don't even need to be particularly sleepy.

Awake photographs can be incredibly beautiful.

Those tiny expressions.

The way they look toward you.

Their little stretches.

The way they study your face.

The tiny fingers wrapped around yours.

Lifestyle newborn photography gives us the freedom to follow your baby rather than expecting them to behave a certain way for the camera.

If they are sleepy, wonderful.

If they're awake, wonderful.

If they need to eat, feed them.

If they need to be held, hold them.

Your baby gets to be a baby.

What Happens During an In-Home Newborn Session?

A typical session is relaxed and baby-led.

We'll spend time photographing your baby individually, but we'll also focus heavily on connection.

You might cuddle together on the bed.

You might hold your baby near a window.

We might photograph your older child meeting or playing with the baby.

We'll capture parents with their new baby, siblings together, and those tiny details that you'll want to remember.

I'll give you simple prompts and gentle direction when needed, but I'm not looking for everyone to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera.

Instead, I want you to interact with your baby.

Look at them.

Hold them.

Kiss their head.

Take a breath.

I'll take care of the rest.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

I generally recommend reaching out during pregnancy, ideally during your second or third trimester.

We use your due date to plan your session, and once your baby arrives, we'll choose the actual date.

If you'd like that classic sleepy, curled-up newborn feeling, the first couple of weeks can be a beautiful time for photographs.

But there isn't one magical deadline.

Older newborns can be photographed beautifully too.

Your baby's personality will simply begin to show up a little differently.

If you're already home with your baby and wondering if you've waited too long, you haven't.

We can still document this season.

The Beauty of Photographing Your Family at Home

There is something special about photographing a family in the place where their life is actually happening.

Your baby doesn't have to perform.

Your home doesn't have to be perfect.

You don't have to know how to pose.

You simply get to be together.

Because years from now, you won't just want to remember what your baby looked like.

You'll want to remember how tiny they felt in your arms.

What their nursery looked like.

The way your older child touched their little hand.

The feeling of those quiet mornings and long nights.

The beginning of becoming a family of three, four, or more.

That's what in-home newborn photography is really about.

Not perfection.

Not props.

Not creating a picture-perfect version of your family.

Just remembering this little piece of your life exactly as it was.
