When Should You Book Newborn Photos? Everything You Need to Know About Timing

One of the questions I hear most often from expecting parents is:

“When should we book our newborn photos?”

And I completely understand why.

You hear that newborn photos have to happen within the first few days. You see those beautifully sleepy, curly-up babies online. And suddenly you're wondering if you need to have your photographer booked months in advance or if you've already missed your chance.

So let's take some of the pressure off.

There is an ideal time to photograph a newborn if you're hoping for a very specific look, but there is no deadline on documenting your baby.

Your baby doesn't have to fit into a perfect little window.

Let's talk about what the timing actually means.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

I recommend reaching out during pregnancy, ideally during your second or third trimester.

You don't need to know your baby's exact birth date. In fact, nobody really does.

We'll use your due date as a starting point and plan for your session around that timeframe. Once your baby arrives, we'll choose the actual date based on when your baby was born and what works for your family.

Booking during pregnancy simply means you have your photographer lined up before those first few weeks arrive.

And then?

You get to focus on having your baby.

When Is the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos?

If you're hoping for those classic sleepy newborn photographs the tiny, the curled-up, the very new, first couple of weeks can be a beautiful time for your session.

Babies are often sleepier during this stage, and they naturally tend to curl up in those sweet newborn positions.

But I want to emphasize something:

The first two weeks are not a deadline.

If your baby is three weeks old, four weeks old, or even a little older, you haven't missed your opportunity.

The photographs may simply look a little different.

And that's okay.

What Changes as Your Baby Gets Older?

One of the things I love about lifestyle newborn photography is that we aren't trying to make your baby fit into a particular pose or look.

As your baby gets a little older, they may spend more time awake.

You might start seeing more eye contact.

More expressions.

More stretching.

More little moments where their personality starts to emerge.

And those things are worth remembering too.

A two-week-old baby and a six-week-old baby are going to give us different photographs—but neither is more valuable than the other.

We're simply documenting your baby at that moment in time.

What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?

This is another reason I don't ask you to choose a specific date months ahead of time.

Babies have their own plans.

If your baby arrives earlier than expected, we'll adjust.

If your baby decides to stay cozy a little longer, we'll adjust.

Your due date is simply our starting point.

Once your baby arrives, we'll figure out a date that makes sense for your family.

You don't need to worry about getting it exactly right.

What If My Baby Isn't Sleepy?

This is probably one of my favorite things to reassure new parents about:

Your baby does not need to sleep for me.

Some of my favorite newborn photographs are of babies who are wide awake.

Those little eyes looking around.

The tiny expressions.

The way they look toward their parents.

The little stretches and movements.

The moments when they seem to be taking in this brand-new world.

Your baby doesn't have to perform for the camera.

We follow their lead.

What If My Baby Cries During the Session?

They probably will.

And that's completely okay.

Babies cry.

They get hungry.

They need a diaper change.

They need to be held.

Sometimes they just need to be close to you.

We stop when they need us to stop.

We feed them, change them, cuddle them, and take our time.

Those pauses aren't interruptions to the session.

They're part of it.

Sometimes the most beautiful photographs happen in those quiet moments when you're comforting your baby.

Is It Too Late If My Baby Is Already a Few Weeks Old?

No.

Please don't look at your calendar and think you've missed your chance.

If you're sitting there with a three-week-old—or a five-week-old—and thinking, “We should have done this already,” you haven't failed at anything.

Your baby is still changing every day.

You are still in those early weeks.

And you will never have this exact version of your baby again.

So if you've been putting off booking because life with a newborn has been a little more overwhelming than you expected, that's okay.

Reach out.

We'll figure it out.

Do We Have to Come to a Studio?

No.

One of the reasons I love in-home newborn photography is that you don't have to pack up your entire life and take a brand-new baby across Vancouver for photographs.

I come to you.

We use your home, your natural light, and the spaces where your family is actually living this season.

If your baby needs to eat, everything you need is right there.

If you need to change them, you're already home.

If your older child needs a break, they can go play.

And if everyone needs five minutes to regroup, we take five minutes.

The session can simply unfold around your baby and your family.

What If My Home Isn't Perfect?

It doesn't need to be.

I promise.

You just had a baby. You have absolutely no obligation to make your home look like a magazine before I arrive.

We will find the rooms with the best light and work within those spaces.

Maybe that's your bedroom.

Maybe it's the nursery.

Maybe it's your living room.

A little tidying around the areas we'll use can be helpful, but you do not need to deep clean your entire house.

Your home is allowed to look like a home.

In fact, one day you may look back at these photographs and be grateful for all those little details that remind you exactly where you were in life at that moment.

So, When Should You Actually Book?

If you're pregnant and you know you'd like newborn photographs, I recommend reaching out during your second or third trimester.

That gives us time to get everything arranged before your baby arrives.

If your baby has already arrived, don't worry about whether you've waited too long.

Just reach out.

We'll talk about where your baby is at and find a date that works.

And if you're somewhere in between—wondering whether you should wait a little longer or book now—we can talk about what you're hoping to remember.

If you're looking for those very sleepy, curled-up newborn photographs, earlier is generally better.

If what matters most to you is documenting the connection, the tiny details, and what these first weeks feel like as a family, there is much more flexibility.

There Isn't One Perfect Time

I think we put a lot of pressure on newborn photography.

The perfect age.

The perfect sleepy baby.

The perfect nursery.

The perfect outfit.

The perfect house.

But real life doesn't work that way.

Maybe your baby sleeps beautifully one day and refuses to sleep the next.

Maybe your house is a little messy.

Maybe you're still figuring out breastfeeding.

Maybe your toddler isn't interested in cooperating.

Maybe you haven't showered.

That's real life with a newborn.

And that's exactly why I love documenting it.

Because these early days aren't going to look like this forever.

Your baby will grow.

Your routines will change.

Those tiny fingers will get bigger.

And eventually, you'll forget some of the little details you were so sure you'd always remember.

What You'll Really Want to Remember

Years from now, I don't think you'll look at these photographs and wish your baby had been one week younger.

You'll look at them and remember how tiny they were.

You'll remember the way you held them.

The way they fit against your chest.

The little expressions they made.

The room where you spent those first weeks together.

The way your older child looked at their new sibling.

The feeling of becoming a family in a completely new way.

That's why I don't believe there is one perfect time for newborn photos.

There is simply your time.

Your baby.

Your family.

Your story.

And I'm here to document it exactly as it is.
